Good morning to everyone, especially Jerry Jones! No media news today- I don’t want to talk about them today.

Life with the roommates is the topic of the day. My 2 youngest roommates have recently found employment at the golf course. They didn’t do it because they wanted to put on the black shirt and scrub golf carts or bag balls… they did it because we told them they HAD to have JOBS. We aren’t tyrants expecting them to put in a 40 hour work week but we did insist that they have somewhere to be ON TIME – away from their phones for a bit a few days a week. Our requirement led to a battle of wills.

First of all, we were informed that $7.25 an hour was a ridiculously low wage and wouldn’t even buy them dinner at McDonalds. Second, we were informed… that it IS summer and they work so hard during the school year, they’ve earned some downtime away from responsibilities. ( I need to add… they’ve had jobs the past 2 summers..not sure why they thought this summer was going to be different… maybe it’s the COVID) Give me a break! Neither of those arguments led to the outcome that they wanted. It led to a statement that if you work MORE than 1 hour, you can afford LOTS of hamburgers and you can’t be responsible teenagers if you DON’T TAKE ON SOME RESPONSIBILITY! We were also told that NONE of their friends parents were making their kids get jobs. Alrighty… lemme check out that FUN FACT. I used my old telecommunications device to reach out to a couple of villagers I know and … well that little statement was debunked quickly. Although the job market is a bit tight these days.. it seems employment in the minimum wage job market DOES have some openings and they ARE being filled with citizens in similar age brackets and skill sets that MY roommates possess. As a mom, I think it’s my duty to encourage their aspirations… so I asked… “WHAT job do you want to have?” I got one, “ I dunno” and 1 … “Offensive Coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.” If you’re listening Jerry… he’s gonna want more than $7.25 an hour but I think you can secure his employment with say… $10.00 per hour. Until then, he’ll be scrubbing golf carts! So… as I type this, I have 2 roomates in the shower, preparing to depart for work. Another battle has been won in our household.

Good day to ya!

  1. My boys each have jobs – ironic the 17 (as of 2 days ago) year old loves working and the 19 year old hates it. Oh well too bad I had a pt job in 11th grade and before that babysat. I didn’t make them cut lawns when they were younger. I let them enjoy the fall semester of highschool (band for one and football for the other) w/o taking weekends away for a pt job. But in December I told them get a job or I will find one for you. My oldest picked doing dishes at a local pizza place and worked his butt off for 6 months until football practice started back up in June. He worked every Friday night – went right after school and didn’t get home until 2am. My youngest started at Shane’s Rib Shack over Christmas break about 20 hours a week in the evenings. Some nights it was 9:30-10 and I had to go get him as he didn’t have a license and my driver was back at USC starting his 2nd semester of his freshman year. But I did what I did and luckily he worked with 2 senior band members who brought him him ALOT. These boys thought of jack as a little brother and were even the ones who got him the job with nothing more than a 5 minute interview. Being in the NHS band basically was the only thing the hiring manager needed to here. Responsibility, well mannered & always punctual are the characteristics of NHS band so his reputation preceded him. Sorry for the bit of bragging lol. So once COVID19 hit and school was online at home jack was given day time hours and a $1 raise plus he is now working 39-40 hours a week. Also is going to become shift leader once the two band seniors leave in mid July for college. The boy loves having his own $$. He has saved almost $5000 after first spending a nice chunk on air pods, Apple Watch and various other “much” needed essentials. He has also decided he wants to go to culinary school for college My oldest got a new job working as a dining room server at my mom’s retirement community. Can you say EASY and he still whines working 3-4 hour shifts 2-3 times a week Hard to believe two boys with same genes are so different in soooo many ways. Sorry for the long post but in a nutshell job builds character.
