The Mask Debate is all over social media these days! You don’t have to look very hard to see folks arguing about it. People claim their face wardrobe is based on “being considerate” and “compassionate” and on “being a good citizen”. Those are all admirable reasons but the bottom line is… they are just their opinions on mask wearing benefits.
I think it’s fabulous that people have differing opinions – I mean really I do! We have differing opinions on everything in life. Toyota is better than Ford. Dallas Cowboys are better than Carolina Panthers. Vacations at the beach are better than vacations in the mountains. Opinions are everywhere and everyone is entitled to have them. And that is where the problems have arisen in the Great Debate.
People are determined that what they think on this subject overrules what anyone else thinks. If you dare to provide a different point of view…..heads explode! “You are WRONG!” “You are killing grandmas”! “You are a selfish super spreader” or on the other side…. “You are government controlled” “You live in fear!” It doesn’t take long for the arguments to get really heated.
The arguments all revolve around the face diaper that we’ve all got stuck somewhere in our car so we can whip it out whenever we stroll into a building. Some take it even a step further… wear ’em IN the car…. wear ’em while you walk on the sidewalk… and on and on. I’ve often wondered if these same people that are wearing them in the car are also strapping them on when they walk from the kitchen to the den? I mean… if there are germs in your car it stands to reason they are in your house too.
Do people have a fancy one for Sunday church and a plain generic one for Kroger? Do people select a mask of the day or just grab the closest one available? I mean these are serious questions that I’ve actually contemplated…… YES… the masks have become a topic that I am bumfuzzled over! Clearly, I need to find a better use of time if I’m spending moments of my day wondering about the method of selecting face diapers but…. it’s the world we live in today.
When the COVID fiasco began we were told… DO NOT WEAR A MASK! They are useless and more than that…. we don’t have enough of them! We need the IMPORTANT people to have access to them so you lowly ordinaries out there…. quit trying to hoard them!
Then it changed… “Wear a mask!” Wear it even if it’s made out of old material leftover from cleaning out your grandmother’s house! I even saw a video post of how to make one out of a ragged old t-shirt. Wear something over your damn face because you are spewing germs in every direction and you have to keep others safe!
All of those Etsy sellers hit the jackpot during this pandemic! They whipped out their sewing machines and cranked them out. You could pick your fabric, choose your straps (elastic or ties), tell them how big your noggin is… do they need XL straps or just the standard ones? VENMO the money and in a mere 3 days… the package that’s gonna save a life arrives in your mailbox.
When the “wear a mask” thing began… it was merely a suggestion. The majority of people eagerly strapped them on. We were seeing videos out of Wuhan, China…. people were dropping dead on the sidewalk! Vans were cruising the streets spraying disinfectant to sanitize the city. They were digging mass graves! It was terrifying!! For God’s sake…. I’ll strap a Huggies on my face and my roommates faces too if that is gonna keep us from relocating to a cemetery!!!
Of course…. we look back now and see that those videos that were released from China were a state run media operation similar to “Argo”. Yes…. we were “Argo-d”! What? You don’t believe me?? Give me a break…. this damn virus has ravaged countries across the globe! Have you ever seen a video from ANYWHERE other than China with that crap happening? New York City was ground zero for this thing in the Spring….. Did you see a video from Times Square of a dude falling flat and being scooped up from the street?? Of course not. It never happened. It didn’t happen HERE and it didn’t happen THERE! The Chinese people are wonderful humans but the Chinese Government & Communist Party is EVIL.
They are 100% to blame for this catastrophe. I know it’s alot more fun to blame the “orange man” in the White House but you are way off base with that. Look back at what happened in China in January. They stopped ALL domestic travel within their country in order to stop the spread to their other provinces but at the same time they kept on welcoming international travelers and letting planes depart heading to other parts of the world. They are EVIL and they are ultimately to blame.
But…. let’s get back to the masks. The masks that you are buying off the shelves in a store (while you are wearing a mask… which is a bit comical to me) clearly state on the box that they are not designed to stop pollution, smoke, germs or bacteria. Trust me… every mask manufacturer with a legal department makes damn sure that disclaimer is on the box!
In other words…… those tiny germs that you are trying to keep to yourself or avoid getting from others are sailing on thru that fabric. If you are adament that your mask works…. then you are wearing an N-95 or a respirator. It’s one or the other because anything else especially the homemade ones are NOT stopping microscopic germs. Period.
Do you want to be safe and limit the spread of germs? Then stay the hell away from people. That’s the solution. Plain and simple. The social distancing thing is a hell of a lot more effective than your Etsy mask or even the one that you’re paying big bucks for at the WalMart. If you feel safer wearing the mask, then strap it on. Maybe you think you are “part of the solution” when you do this. You are welcome to believe that. You are being an opinionated obtuse human if you criticize someone else for choosing not to believe it.
Let’s go a step further here and look at some real world data (because everyone loves numbers and data right?) That’s where the real truth exists. Some ding dong patio blogger isn’t an epidemiologist and doesn’t understand germ warfare! You are correct with that statement. Hell, I had to look up the spelling of epidemiologist!
Over the past few months states in our country have gone from merely “suggesting” that you put that thing on your face to “demanding” it! Governors and Mayors have issued emergency mandates requiring people to strap it on. Let’s look at how effective those mask mandates have been at slowing the spread and reducing the cases shall we??
Let’s start with Oregon. Over there on the West Coast….. certainly they’ve got this figured out.
How about Kansas? The CDC did a study there on the success of their mask mandates.
North Carolina… my old stomping grounds. Have ya’ll been successful?
Massachusetts… What ya’ll got? I mean certainly you’ve been successful because you mandate the diapers AT ALL TIMES when you are in public. Walking to your car, strolling in the park…. you all are wearing them ALL the time so certainly your cases have declined.
Let’s look at Governor Cuomo’s great state. He’s been heralded as the success story by Anthony Fauci. Of course, Cuomo gave a death sentence to 11,000 by mandating COVID+ patients be put in nursing homes so it wasn’t hard to make NY look successful when they stopped intentionally killing people.
How about Los Angeles County? They aren’t allowed to do a a damn thing over there! Everything is closed.. no dining, no gyms, no FUN! Certainly their mask mandates have slowed the spread
So… in a nutshell the masks aren’t quite the virus stopper people claim they are. If you disagree, then by all means…. wear it! But… the increase in cases since they were mandated certainly calls into question their efficacy. Therefore….. if someone chooses to say it doesn’t help and they don’t want to wear it…..you need to stop criticizing them. You need to stop with the “you are selfish” and I am “saving the world” mantra because it’s really not a good look. You are entitled to an opinion. EVERYONE is entitled to an opinion on this subject. Honestly that’s all we have in this mask debate. There are NO scientific definitive studies that state with 100% certainty that they work. There just aren’t.
Stop arguing over it! You are lambasting your friends because they have differing opinions. Would you argue as passionately about who makes the best automobile or where the best vacation spot is?? This mask debate falls in the same category whether you want to admit it or not.
Step back (step 6 feet back) and remember that we are all stuck in this situation together. We all want it to end. We all want our kids back in school, our stores and restaurants reopened and our jobs to continue. We all want our normal daily lives back. There is alot at stake for alot of people and critcizing someone over face attire is really ridiculous in the grand scheme.
If you want to post your flowery words about “love” and “contributing to the good of society” by wearing a mask just know that your words are simply that… words. There is no “science” that says you are doing more than any other human walking the Earth. When I started writing this BLOG months ago… I always placed a helpful tidbit at the end. That tidbit DOES have definitive evidence of success. DO IT! ALL THE TIME! If you really want this crap to end… do something that we KNOW stops a virus from spreading!
